Pasture Raised Tunis Lamb & Sheep
At Aisling Hill Farm, we raise and sell Tunis and Tunis Cross sheep. We decided on the Tunis breed for many reasons. One big and important factor in raising this breed lies in its history. Originally from Tunisia in North Africa, they first came to America when they were gifted to George Washington by the Bey of Tunis in the late 1700s, who then gifted them to Judge Richard Peters of Belmont, Pennsylvania. This breed is also known for its quality meat, and docile nature, which we can attest to. In 2023, we are also expanding to include the Katahdin breed. This is another breed developed in the USA, getting its name from Mount Katahdin, Maine, where the breed originates. It is a “hair” sheep, which means their wool is more like hair and sheds in the spring. They are prolific milkers and very hardy.
We sell both live and freezer lambs, and they are 100% pasture raised. Our sheep and lamb are given grain only during gestation and birthing to help the mothers milk production. After a few weeks we halt the grain and they are raised solely on our pasture. They are handled regularly and are easily amongst the most spoiled here at Aisling Hill. Being a smaller farm allows us to easily ensure our sheep are treated to the highest standards, all of our sheep have names, not numbers, and we enjoy every single day with them. These sheep bring us so much joy on the farm that it is hard to remember a time without them. If you are interested in adding Tunis to your flock or starting your own, please reach out to us to get on our waitlist. We will be more than happy to talk to you about sheep, or anything else you might have questions about.
