Our Journey
The journey we were on that led us to our place on the side of this hill was a long one. Our eyes were opened to the state of large scale commercial agriculture quite a few years ago. This was the start of our trip to better quality food. We started, as many do, with a small garden and purchasing food from local farms and providers as often as possible. Eventually we got our own chickens for fresh eggs and began getting our beef from a local small scale farmer. After some time, we were pushing the boundaries of what our neighborhood would tolerate by raising a few turkeys for ourselves and family. Life in the suburbs never truly satisfied us, and we always yearned for more.
We decided to go to Ireland to fulfill a dream trip. We could not stop thinking about that magical experience when we got home, and it was the final push we needed to buy more land and raise livestock. We purchased this farm and went straight to work. The pastures were mismanaged and very overgrown with weeds and fencing had to be repaired. Within two weeks of moving in, a bad rainstorm came through, flooded our barn, and we discovered the roof over our living room had a severe leak. We faced a myriad of other problems and issues along the way. We thought we had made a huge mistake but it turned out to be a blessing.
Six months after moving to the farm, the world was shut down due to the Coronavirus. We looked at this as an opportunity to expand our self reliance and make stronger connections to other local farmers. We began to homeschool 1 month before the pandemic, bought a couple ponies, goats, and Tunis sheep, planted a large garden, learned new farming skills, and picked up new hobbies. This farm is a dream of ours come true, and we couldn’t be happier. Aisling is Irish for dream, and we couldn’t think of a more appropriate name.
